SHILLONG: Rural job card holders of Horipur VEC under Selsella constituency on Monday burnt their cards in protest against the alleged anomalies in the functioning of the VEC.
Rajiul Islam Raju, one of the President candidates of the VEC election, said Golam Hasan became VEC Secretary in 2013 and in two months, he withdrew the previous balance fund Rs 3.6 lakh from the VEC account without consulting job card holders.
“But when this matter came into light through an RTI report, he was suspended and he refunded the amount to the authority concerned under public pressure,” he said.
However, he again joined his post and withdrew the wage money for 42 days and misused Rs 1 lakh, but this time no action was taken a complaint
The card holders now want that the concerned department must conduct the election as soon as possible or dissolve the VEC.
When contacted, West Garo Hills DC Pravin Bakshi said the matter is pending before the High Court.
He said the District Administration has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
