SHILLONG: There was unprecedented traffic snarl in parts of the city and outskirts causing inconvenience to many including the tourists on Friday morning.
Due to the puja shopping, for several hours, the traffic came to a standstill in parts of the city too.
In Upper Shillong, the traffic snarl lasted for  almost three hours as a truck carrying wood fell down at Lummawbah junction.
While several people had to walk to their respective work places, the tourists were the most affected.
There is also suspicion on the manner of transportation of wood allegedly in violation to the order of Supreme Court against tree felling.
Concerned over the unusual traffic snarl, the legislator from Sohra Titus Chyne said that last week, after two trucks capsized, there was chaotic situation similar to the one on Friday.
The government should take immediate steps to address the issue and there is a need to widen the road from Upper Shillong to Umshyrpi.   “Widening of the road is the immediate need of the hour and the government should negotiate with the defence authorities to make the road from Upper Shillong a double lane”, he added
When contacted, the PWD (roads) Minister Martin Danggo said that he had already informed the Assembly during the September session that there is a proposal to expand the road from Umshyrpi bridge to 7th mile.
“The feasibility report is being prepared by the concerned agency in this regards”, Danggo added.
