SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) is finding it difficult to get deserving candidates for the district council by-polls scheduled for December 13.
KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum has urged probable candidates to come forward to contest on the party’s ticket. Of the seven vacant seats that are going to polls, KHNAM has fielded candidates only for two – Mawthadraishan and Laban.
“We need candidates who are willing to serve for the purpose of the indigenous people,” Nongrum said, adding, “The time is too short and we are hopeful that people will come forward.”
The other seats for the MDC by-election include Nongspung-Sohiong, Nongkrem, Rambrai-Jyrngam, Mairang-Nongkhlaw and Amlarem.
Meanwhile, the campaigning for the December 13 by-polls is yet to pick up pace and parties are expected to go full steam ahead only after filing of nominations that will start on November 21.
All the parties, including the BJP, have fielded candidates for the district council by-polls next month.
