SHILLONG: In a noble gesture, the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) has decided to drop patients coming from Silchar, Karimganj and Hailakandi in Assam for treatment in NEIGRIHMS directly to the health institute.
A senior official of the MTC on Wednesday informed The Shillong Times that each day around 15-20 patients come from Silchar and other neighbouring areas in each of the MTC buses that ply along the route.
“The passengers will be dropped free of cost  to NEIGRIHMS,” the official said, and added that the decision was taken in view of the exorbitant rates charged by local taxis in Police Bazar to drop the patients to NEIGRIHMS in the morning hours.
The official informed that the buses will be diverted from Mawryngkneng to Shillong by-pass to drop the patients to NEIGRIHMS.
The move was also appreciated by passengers from neighbouring states who visit the premier health institute of the city in large numbers.
