US President elect Donald Trump has had his first major confrontation globally. It concerns the Paris Climate Deal which the US signed on October 5 and became international law on November 5. with Trump calling climate change and global warming a “hoax” and threatening to withdraw from the Paris deal during his campaign, there has been a great deal of concern about the faith of the deal during the UN Climate Change Confluence at Marrakech in Morocco. UN Secretary General Ba Ki- Moon hoped Trump would evaluate his “campaign remarks” which did not signify a policy change especially as John Kerry is still Secretary of state. The UN chief has already talked to Donald Trump and feels the President elect would act in the interest of market forces. Trump was a successful business man and can be expected to be responsive to market forces. Such market forces should be harnessed for the good of the planet.
Ban Ki-Moon referred to the global unity around climate change which was achieved in Paris. Every member of the UN including the US signed The Agreement. Not just Governments but Business CEOs and civil societies have shown their strong commitment to address the challenges of Climate change. The global business community is moving towards de-carbonizing and lessening the carbon foot print. American companies and local governments have understood the severity of the Climate crisis. They are doing it to make consumers happy said Ban- Ki- Moon. Besides, a low carbon economy is conducive to their business feature. Whatever Trump may have said in his campaign trail, he may not now overlook these factors. And his reaching out to Russia and China may persuade him to fall in line with a climate deal, however, prolonged the implementation might take.
