MCTA holds Swachh Bharat Abhiyan debate in city

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya College Teachers’ Association (MCTA) organised the 11th R.R Thomas Memorial Inter-College Debate Competition on the motion ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a catalyst for a cleaner India’ on Wednesday at Shillong College.
Prof H. Lamin, Pro Vice-Chancellor of NEHU who was the chief guest, lauded the MCTA for organising the memorial debate “to honour an academician of the State who was the principal of Cotton College in 1945-46 and contributed to promoting education in the northeastern region”.
Lamin said NEHU is contemplating promotion of education aiming at self-reliance in the State as well as the region.
Former MLA Manas Chaudhuri who chaired the debate as Speaker urged the MCTA to start a Debating Society to encourage and promote the Debating culture which is declining in the state especially amongst the youth. He also encouraged the young participants to be part of activities that will mould their personalities.
Regional Director, IGNOU, Shillong, Dr A.S. Guha, Prof. Lakhan Kma, NEHU , NSS Coordinator and Dr V.Laloo, District MCH officer, West Jaintia Hills were the judges  and aktogether, there were 12 participants representing 6 Colleges.
Rosabel Marngar (St. Anthony’s) was adjudged as the Best Debater,  Kamesh Gareri (Sankerdev College) won the second best speaker prize and the Humorous speaker prize was also awarded to Kamesh Gareri (Sankerdev College). St. Anthony’s College was declared the Champion team while St Mary’s were the Runners up team.
