Santosh Trophy: Hosts beat Assam 2-0

SHILLONG: Meghalaya continued their winning run in the Santosh Trophy North East zone qualifying round beating Assam 2-0 at the 1st Ground, Polo here on Saturday.
A goal each in either half was enough to overcome an Assam side which looked out of sorts for most part of the tie. While Dibinroy Nongspung converted from the spot in the 41st minute to get a breakthrough for the hosts, last match’s hero Bansharai Sun double the lead in the 80th minute to seal the fate of the game.
Earlier, Assam started rather well and even looked threatening in the first 20 minutes. The visitors, however, lost ground gradually as a confident Meghalaya side began to smell blood. While Dibinroy made no mistake in converting the penalty that came Meghalaya’s way in the 40th minute, Assam was guilty of squandering a golden opportunity when it failed to convert from the spot.
The debacle seemed to demoralise the Assam ranks as they looked mediocre at best in the second half.
Meghalaya too were guilty of letting a couple of good chances go begging in the second half but Bansharai Sun scored with absolute ease from inside the box to save his side the blushes in a game that the hosts should have won in a more convincing fashion.
Meghalaya who had beaten Arunachal Pradesh 6-0 in the first game will take on Nagaland on Monday.
Meanwhile, in a high voltage clash, Mizoram will lock horns with Manipur on Sunday.
