SHILLONG: The Mawhati Constituency Political Committee (MCPC) has asserted that it will withdraw its support to Mawhati MLA Julius Dorphang if he is found guilty in the alleged rape case of a minor.
Speaking to media persons here on Monday, the Committee functionaries strongly defended the arrested independent legislator stating that the case may be a trap laid by persons with vested political interests ahead of the 2018 elections.
P. Mangu, the working president of the Committee, claimed that the MLA did not abscond but he went to Guwahati for a medical check-up.
“He (Dorphang) told us over phone on December 30 that he had gone to Guwahati for medical check-up,” said Mangu.
Showing complete lack of knowledge on the case, the Committee working president further questioned the reason behind filing “too many” FIRs against the legislator in the case and argued that why can’t it be just one FIR.
The MCPC president said all members would “fully cooperate” with the investigating agencies and urged the court to direct police for speeding up the investigation.
A lower court in Shillong had remanded Dorphang in five-day police custody on Saturday.
At least two FIRs have been filed by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) against him, one at Laitumkhrah police station and the other in Ri Bhoi district.
