AIDS awareness
SHILLONG: The FKJGP Diengpasoh Unit in collaboration with Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS), Diengpasoh Durbar and the East Khasi Hills District Police, organised an awareness programme on the affects of Drugs, Alcohol and HIV at Umkhen Bridge, Shillong By-Pass on Friday at 11 am. The programme was precided by Bristar Mawthoh, president FKJGP Diengpasoh Unit.
J. Tariang Meghalaya Aids Control Society, (MACS) spoke on HIV contraction and prevention. Ian Swer, MPS, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Re), East Khasi Hills spoke on accidents at the national highway and precautions to be taken by truck drivers.
While the chief guest, Vivek Syiem, MPS, Superintendent of Police discussed about the length on the need to abstain from drugs especially heroin coupled with spreading of HIV by truck drivers and the social and penal consequences of sex work on the national highway.
A voluntary testing for HIV for truck drivers was also undertaken by MACS. About 200 truck drivers, handyman, shopkeepers and women of the area attended the programme.
Power ministry provides equipment to disabled
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Parents Association (MePAD) for the disabled appreciated the efforts of Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), Ministry of Power, Shillong for sponsoring equipments and appliances, such as, wheelchairs, crutches, hearing aids, white cane etc. to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi District.
The generous gesture by REC has benefited numerous PWDs who had no hope or avenues to be on their own. Old age people, who are dependent on crutches for their normal movements also stand benefited. MePAD urged the government departments, corporations and private parties to come forward and extend all possible help in this regard and for the manufacturers to come and study the local needs of the hilly areas and design their equipments and appliances, especially wheelchairs for proper accessibility.
Muskut Elaka gets new Dolloi
JOWAI: The returning officer, Dolloiship elections, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elected Phrangki Rynjah as the new Dolloi of Muskut Elaka.
Phrangki defeated his cousin brother Donbhalang Rynjah by 20 votes. The counting of votes was held on Friday. The JHADC conducted the Doloi election on Wednesday with 94 percent turnout.
Muskut Elaka is the smallest Elaka in Jaintia Hills. It has only one village with total votes of 71. Only male members who are above 18 years can cast their votes in any Dolloi elections in Jaintia Hills.
