SHILLONG: An early monitoring of the faculties of a child may help prevent disabilities, said an expert at an orientation programme organised by Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) on Friday.
R.C Nitnaware, faculty at, and officer in charge of National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped Regional Centre in Navi Mumbai, said, “Checking motor skills, hearing and vision of children from an early age can help prevent disabilities,” he said.
He gave a detailed presentation on the 21 types of physical and mental disabilities, schemes and Acts concerning people with disabilities and other related issues.
Nitnaware also spoke about the prevention and early detection of disabilities in children at birth.
The programme, aimed at creating awareness among students, was initiated by the office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities in collaboration with MLCU. Around 140 students from different departments attended the orientation programme.
The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), Persons with Disability Act 1995 (under revision), the National Trust Act, 1999, and RTE 2010 are some of the laws to benefit the disabled, Nitnaware said.
