SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills police said on Tuesday it can take up a case against the sordar of Nongjri village under Section 201 of the IPC for not informing the authority about the death of a 43-year-old man from the village.
He was allegedly killed by Bangladeshi miscreants.
On March 23, the decapitated body of one Pynbeit Khongtir (43) was recovered from Nongjri village. The relatives cremated the body without informing the authority.
During inquiry, it was alleged that the man was murdered by Bangladeshi nationals who trespassed into his plantation to steal. Addressing media persons, EKH SP Davis Marak said the investigation showed villagers reported the matter to the sordar but the information was not shared with the authorities. “We can take up the case against the sordar for destruction of evidence,” he added.
Marak said the sordar was called for examination but he has not appeared till date. A case of murder has been registered.
Asked about the delay in reporting of crime from far-flung places of the district, Marak said poor connectivity and remoteness of the area are the main factors for the delay.
Police have started a suo motu case after taking cognizance of the death of the person.
