Guwahati: The city police, crime branch, has arrested the SSP of CID, N Rajamarthandan, IPS, who was suspended on April 4 by state’s home department for allegedly leaking vital information regarding a sensitive case which was being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by him.
A top city police official informed that the SSP was arrested last midnight after two days of questioning in the wake of a criminal case filed against by the DIG of CID, Raunak Ali Hazarika.
The arrested IPS officer was produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) here and the court granted two days of police custody.
Further interrogation of the SSP was being carried out and evidence of his involvement in conspiracy and forgery had been found.
The SSP allegedly filed faked RTI application himself in the name of a leader of Nikhil Bharat Udbanshu
Samanway Samity (NBBUSS) to seek information on the on-going SIT investigation into the case even though RTI Act doesn’t provides for giving out information on sub-judice or under investigation criminal cases. Dr Subodh Biswas who was arrested by Assam police after a massive manhunt from North 24 Pargana district in West Bengal last month, is suspected to be the main culprit behind the communal violence that broke out in Silapathar area of Dhemaji district of eastern Assam on March 7 last.
Biswas is a leader of the NBBUSS whose activists ransacked the local office of the influential All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in Silapathar after Biswas had allegedly delivered a communally fiery speech in a meeting of the organisation at Silapathar on that day. The incident triggered rave communal passion in many parts of the state and alert was sounded all over the state besides deployment of additional forces.
