SHILLONG: Being the capital city of the state, Shillong remains in dark after the sunset. The street lighting is far from being satisfactory.
Unlike other capital cities, most part of Shillong remains under complete darkness once the sun goes down and nobody seems to be bothered about making the city glitter under lights at par with other capital cities.
It is seen that the entire junction from Civil Hospital till Lumdiengjri has flood lights at four junctions while the whole road between the junctions remain under darkness since most of the street lights are not functioning.
The stretch from Dhankheti till Fire Brigade and beyond also have only few functional street lights, however, many stretches of the area are still in dark.
If one goes by residents, Meghalaya Government pays attention to street lights only in the stretch from IGP point to Police Bazar junction since street lights are somehow working well while the Government and MeECL seems least bothered about other areas. Earlier, Urban Affairs Minister, R.V. Lyngdoh had pointed out that the Government would be using the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds of some firms for street lightings especially at the entry of the city.
