SHILLONG: Two pressure groups, KSU and FKJGP, have condemned the attack on two Khasi men on Wednesday allegedly by non-tribals.
In separate statements to the media, the organisations have opposed the decision of the police to let off the accused even before arrest on the grounds that they were juveniles.
The police took the decision without any prove or without interrogation, the KSU said.
The Khasi Students’ Union Laban Circle and Upper Shillong Circle met the Officer-in-Charge of Rilbong Beat House to enquire about the matter and also to complain that the attack on Khasis in the area is not the first incident.
“The union will not tolerate such heinous offences against indigenous people and if such crimes keep repeating in future then it may lead to communal riots like in the year 1987,” it stated.
The two men, Manbha Kupar Kshiar and Wanri Kordon Khyriem, were attacked at Umshyrpi, Military Hospital.
The KSU alleged that a group of around 15 non-tribals, mostly Nepalese, robbed, injured and attempted to murder the duo when they were returning home from work around 9.30 pm on Wednesday.
The Laban circle demanded punishment of the miscreants.
FKJGP, which warned of retaliation, urged the families of the victims to put pressure on the miscreants to surrender to police.
