SHILLONG: A section of the media on Monday asked national president of BJP Mahila Morcha Vijaya Rahatkar to speak in English at a press conference in the city on Monday as they were not conversant with Hindi.
The request from the media persons came after Rahatkar informed the audience that she was “comfortable in Hindi” and “not very good in English”.
Later, a translator, Deeya Rathore, in charge of BJP’s state media cell, was called in. The parliamentary committee on official language has advocated the need to make Hindi the official language in the country at the earliest. In a recent visit to the state, Prasanna Kumar Patasani, member of a sub-committee of the House panel for inspection, said Hindi is spoken in many parts of the world.
However, the Centre, in a media statement, had said it would not impose Hindi on non-Hindi speakers.
