SHILLONG: The State BJP leadership has called Chief Minister Mukul Sangma a ‘dictator’ and said voters in Meghalaya will give a fitting reply to the Congress in the 2018 Assembly elections.
Reacting to Sangma’s ‘spectator’ comment about BJP national spokesperson Nalin Kohli, the party’s State general secretary Bashailang Khongwir said on Sunday, “He (Sangma) has ruled the State like a dictator and turned the people, including the ministers, into mere spectators.”
Sangma said on Saturday Kohli was a “shouting spectator” while he was the real player.
“People of the State find the matches played by Sangma boring. The time has come for people to change to good players who will play good matches in the field for the interest of people of the State,” Khongwir said.
Sangma had also said if the BJP leader really wanted to know about the development of the State, he should have visited Meghalaya at least 5-7 years back and then compare it with the present situation.
To this, Khongwir said on Sunday that time “is not a factor to gauge the performance of Sangma”.
Taunting the much hyped issue of turning “Polo market” into “Times Square”, Khongwir said, “It is not just a beautiful dream where Sangma wakes up one day and says ‘I will make a Time Square at Polo market’.”
Referring to the State’s development, Khongwir pointed out that Assam has six medical colleges and more than 10 engineering colleges.
He said the need to set up a medical college is yet to be fulfilled by the State Government. Last week, Kohli too questioned the State Government’s inability to build a medical college.
“When are we going to see an international stadium,” said Khongwir referring to the chief minister’s promise to set up a stadium of international standard in Ampati.
Echoing Kohli, the state BJP leader said Sangma is playing in the field for his own interest and his family’s.
