SHILLONG: The World Day Against Child Labour was observed with the launch of ‘back to school programme’ through Ferrando Ray of Hope in Mawlai and Pynthorbah on Monday.
On the occasion, children mesmerized the small gathering at Ferrando Transit Shelter Home, Mawlai Mawdakbaki with a song on stopping child labour and for people to extend a helping hand to the victims so that they have access to education.
Observed under the theme, ‘Protect children from child labour’, the programme was organized by the North Eastern Regional Domestic Workers’ Movement (NERDWM) in collaboration with Ferrando Ray of Hope.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, Chairperson of State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Meena Kharkongor said, “Children are robbed of their childhood when they are engaged in manual work.”
She added that though child labour exists in the State, the scenario in East Khasi Hills district is better due to the concerted efforts of various government departments in monitoring the menace.
Kharkongor also spoke on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
Sr Teresa Salemthangi, regional coordinator of NERDWM, said the objective of the “back to school programme” is to empower children of domestic workers to claim their rights and entitlements through education and community collaboration.
Meanwhile, social organisation SPARK also observed the day by organising a series of activities.
A community awareness programme was organized by SSA, the Education Department, in collaboration with SPARK stressing on the importance of education with an aim to bring all working children back to school.
A signature campaign was carried out in different areas in East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi asking people’s commitment to fight against child labour.
This signature campaign was carried out along with distribution of pamphlets at different places like Dhankheti, Malki, Laitumkhrah, Mawlynrei, Rynjah, Golflink, Polo, Motphran etc.
Finally, a get-together was organised to make the day special for the children.
