SHILLONG: P M Sangma took charge as Managing Director (MD) Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) from A. Nikhla  at 5 P.M on Friday.

The development comes at a crucial time when the Meghalaya Transport Corporation Workers’ Union (MTCWU) has called for a strike demanding to revoke the transfer order of Nikhla.

The MTCWU said that it would continue with their strike that has already brought all MTC services to halt. They went on a strike since June 27 disrupting school bus services, railway counter at MTC office, inter-state bus services and Meghalaya Helicopter Service.

  1. Rumnong, general secretary of MTCWU said, “We will continue to agitate even if the new MD comes, not that we are against him but against the state government for not revoking the transfer order of Nikhla.”

He stated that the Union had submitted a memorandum in this regard to Transport Minister, HDR Lyngdoh and Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma but till date there had been no response from the government.

MTCWU through its president, Erwin Sutnga will approach the Union Ministry of Surface Transport as, the union maintains, the Central Government had a say in the functioning of the Corporation. Sutnga said, “I will be leaving on Sunday for Delhi and will brief the MPs of the state as well.”
