TURA: Lecturers who are teaching Degree students in the morning shift at Tura Government College have sought enhancement of their salaries as well as its release on a regular and monthly basis.

In their letter to the Director of Higher and Technical Education in Shillong, the teachers have rued that they are being paid a meager amount of Rs 5000/- per month which is also paid one-time annually, while their counterparts in the Higher Secondary level are paid Rs 15,000/- monthly.

According to the teachers, the current enrollment of students in the first semester alone is more than 1900 besides the third and the fifth semester batches which have 790 and 399 students respectively.

Compared to the large number of students, the teachers lamented, the number of lecturers are limited resulting in heavy work load for them. Besides, they said, the introduction of the semester system had also added to their woes as work had increased in the form of conducting tests and other examinations.

Reminding that they have been rendering their services to the students with dedication since 2008, the teachers have urged the official to look into their grievances. Copies of their complaint have also been forwarded to the Chief Minister, the education minister and other officials concerned.
