WJH killer cop surrenders in Kharkutta

TURA/JOWAI: A Meghalaya police constable who shot his senior dead before fleeing with his service rifle in West Jaintia Hills earlier this week has surrendered in Kharkutta in North Garo Hills on Thursday.
Constable Lusen A Sangma of the 3rd Meghalaya Police Battalion was on the run for four days.
He surrendered without the rifle that he had taken away after shooting Havildar Litsingh Inghi and told police that he had abandoned it in a jungle shortly after the incident.
Jowai police brought the accused back to the district on Thursday night and on being interrogated, he led them to a forest where he had dumped the self-loaded rifle. It took the police a long time to find it as Sangma could not remember where he had thrown it.
The magazine of the recovered weapon was loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition indicating that during the incident last Sunday, Sangma had opened 30 rounds.
Sangma reportedly told police that the havildar had verbally abused him on the night of July 30 and in a feat of rage he opened fire from his service weapon.
The arrested constable was taken back to the battalion headquarters at Khliehtyrshi in West Jaintia Hills to search for the rifle that he had abandoned. The rifle has since been found in a jungle area that was used by the constable to flee after the shooting.
