TURA: On a day Tura was holding an important programme termed Road Safety Advocacy under the theme “Your Safety secures your family-Be cautious on Roads” to raise awareness on safety on the roads to prevent loss of precious lives, a young man and his lady companion riding a scooter were run over by a speeding Tata Sumo vehicle on the national highway 51 at Asanang near Tura on Wednesday afternoon.

The victims, Anil Alom of Mendipathar town and his pillion rider Ms. Nithpilash R Sangma of A’kremgre Bajengdoba in North Garo Hills had left Tura en route to Bajengdoba riding a scooty when a speeding Tata Sumo taxi (ML08 D 4600) coming from Shillong with passengers rammed into the scooter at Jendragre village of Asanangre, 18 kms from Tura.

The sumo vehicle had reportedly crossed over from its lane and veered into the path that the two-wheeler was passing through. The impact was so tremendous that Alom, who was driving the scooter, was flung out of the two wheeler landing several feet away.

While Nithpilash was killed on the spot, Alom was first rushed to the nearby Asanang primary health centre with serious injuries and from there he was being taken to Tura civil hospital for advanced medical care when he succumbed to his injuries on the way.

The driver of the sumo vehicle, Mackson A Sangma has since been arrested.
