SHILLONG: A two-day workshop on rain water harvesting system in schools for the purpose of drinking water and sanitation held on Thursday at Maharam Government Higher Secondary School, Mawkyrwat wherein Hadrian Lyngdoh, local MDC was the chief guest.
The programme was organized by the State Project Director, SEMAM, S S A and Director of School Education and Literacy, Meghalaya in collaboration with Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA), Water Resource and Earthanus Auroville Foundation, Pondicherry.
Speaking on the occasion, Lyngdoh said that the programme was organized with a view to conserve and preserve water with a hope that the programme would benefit the people of this area. “Water is one of the basic necessity of life”, he said adding the people should be involved in rain water harvesting system which is not new but could be a failure if not implemented properly.
He said that as this area was one of the more wet places on the earth, preservation and conservation of water is a must for every household so that that stored water can be used during the period of water scarcity.
“Therefore, each one of us should make proper use of this kind of innovation by realising the value and preciousness of water,” he said and urged all to avail the benefits through this programme as this could be a source of livelihood in the form of mineral water. He requested the officers to organise more of such programmes in the future so that the people of the district could be benefited.
It may be mentioned that a rain water harvesting such system, the second in the State, has been setup at Government Lower Primary School, Mawkyrwat with a water storage tank of about 6000 litres. The first such unit was set up at Umthli, Laitlyngkot, East Khasi Hills District.
