New Delhi : Gujarat Police officers N.K. Amin and Tarun Barot – both facing criminal cases involving alleged fake encounters – on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that they will quit the state police on Thursday itself.

As senior counsel Kriahna Kumar, appearing for both Amin and Barot, conveyed the decision, the bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said the handing and taking over charge must be completed on Thursday.

Both Amin and Barry were re-employed by the Gujarat government on contract after they retired.

While Amin was serving as Superintendent of Police at Tapi in Gujarat, Barot was appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ), Western Railway, Vadodra.

The two officers communicated their decision to quit after the top court on Wednesday had asked the Gujarat government to take a call on the fate of two officers failing which it would decide the matter.

Former IPS officer Rahul Sharma had moved the court challenging their appointment after retirement.

Amin was acquitted in the case involving the killing of Kausarbi – wife of Sohrabuddin Sheikh – and the disposal of his body. Sohrabuddin was killed in an “encounter” with Gujarat Police.

Barot is an accused in the Ishrat Jahan case.

The Gujarat government had on Wednesday described Amin as an “outstanding” officer while defending his re-appointment on contract for one year. (IANS)
