SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council has given two weeks’ time to the traditional heads of 54 different Sirdars, Wahadadars and Syiems (chiefs) to come up with opinions and suggestions on the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
This was decided in a meeting held by the KHADC with the traditional heads of 25 Khasi states and 29 British Sirdarship at the Khasi National Dorbar Hall in Mawkhar on Wednesday. Copies of the proposed amendment and the points suggested by the Meghalaya Indigenous Tribal Constitutional Rights Movement will be sent to the traditional heads to enable them to give their views and suggestions for the proposed amendment. KHADC chief executive member Pynshngain N Syiem told reporters that they would meet after two weeks when the traditional heads were equipped with the required knowledge on the proposed amendment.
The meeting discussed the status of Instrument of Accession (IOA) and Annexed Agreement (AA) and the need to include the IOA and AA in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Asked about the role of the Federation of Khasi States (FKS), Syiem said the district council was yet to recognize the federation as it is an “old organisation” whose role needed to be reviewed.
Speaking to reporters in the evening, Latiplang Kharkongor, executive member in charge of Elaka said, “There is a proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs to discuss the amendment to the Sixth Schedule in the next session of Parliament.”
