57 fined for disposing garbage

SHILLONG: The Shillong Municipal Board in its bid to curtail random disposal of garbage has fined 57 people caught disposing garbage in the roadside and open spaces between June to October while 25 have been penalised with fines ranging from 5000 to 25000/- under the Polluters Pay Principle.
Official source from SMB said that another 88 households have been issued with notices for directly discharging sewage into drains and streams under the Environmental Protection Act 1986, the Prohibition of Employment of Manual Scavengers Act 2013 and the Meghalaya Municipal Act 1973. Fines ranging from 20000/- to 25000/- have been imposed on them.
In this connection, 14 people have paid fines. The total fines collected as on October 31 is Rs. 4,45,500.
