SHILLONG: Three persons have been arrested for extorting money from Assam-based traders in Ri Bhoi.
Roshan Ali and two others lodged a complaint that on November 15, a person in a red Maruti Alto signalled their pick-up vans with Assam registration numbers to stop at 20th Mile around 8.30pm. The traders were transporting poultry from Jagiroad to Silchar in Assam.
The three Assam traders were asked to pay Rs 1,000 each, the complaint stated.
Later, after crossing Nongpoh, occupants of a blue Maruti signalled them to stop and demanded Rs 1,000 each.
On both occasions they settled for Rs 300 each.
However, on reaching Umsning, occupants of another similar car asked them to stop and demanded Rs 2,000 each and threatened them with dire consequences if they failed to pay. Police arrested three occupants of the last car.
