NONGPOH: The office of the Nongpoh Town Committee (NTC) was finally inaugurated by the Chief Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya, Dr DD Lapang after two decades of functioning without a proper office on Friday since it was formed 25 years ago in the year 1995.
The inauguration of Nongpoh Town Committee was also attended by Meghalaya PHE Minister, Dr Celestine Lyngdoh, Sordar of Nongpoh Elaka, W Syiem, Chairman of NTC, E K Lapang, Assistant Engineer Urban Department, Nongpoh, R Langstieh, Secretary of NTC, Rayonald Kharkamni and host of other prominent leaders including the women leaders of Nongpoh area.
Speaking at the function, Dr Lapang congratulated the newly-elected members of Nongpoh Town Committee for their selflessness to work for the betterment of the community and also for having a new office building of its own.
“As Nongpoh town is the main focal center of the district, it, therefore, needs to set good examples to other areas of the district and the state as a whole” Lapang said adding that the Nongpoh Town Committee is empowered to look into the welfare of the town such as cleanliness, developmental needs and others, hence he appealed to the members of the committee to render their best services to the people and to have a close co-ordination with the local village durbars under their jurisdiction.
The rising influx is the other areas, Lapang stressed, for the elected members to keep a close watch besides expressing hope that the new committee can bring changes to the socio-economic conditions of the people of the town.
The PHE Minister, Dr C. Lyngdoh in his speech urged the members of the town committee to keep and maintain proper records of accounts and their actions during their terms. He also stressed on the importance of cleanliness in the town, while urging them to widely spread the message to all the shopkeepers, traders, local drivers and the general public not to throw any garbage in the roadsides or lane or the drainage instead they must properly keep the garbage in the dustbin for the convenience of all.
