TURA: Villagers from Achotchongre and Korepara areas in Mendal region of North Garo Hills district have complained to the deputy commissioner and also the executive engineer of the PWD roads division about the delay in completion of central road projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
The projects have been hanging fire for the last two and a half years.
Village elders under the Achotchongre Area Development Committee met Deputy Commissioner SC Sadhu and called on the executive engineer.
“Due to neglect and slow progress of the lady contractor who hails from Kusimkolgre locality of Williamnagar, not even 40 percent of the work is complete while the date for commencement of the project was more than two and a half years back. Residents from the area are facing difficulties in travelling, carrying goods and the situation is worst during monsoon,” alleged Garo Students Union Mendal unit general secretary Samar R Marak.
The villagers together with NGOs have urged the PWD authorities to hasten the construction by deploying sufficient earth excavation machines, dumper trucks and workers.
According to the NGOs there are close to half a dozen PMGSY road projects currently under construction and most of them are in progress except for the Achotchongre and Korepara road projects.
While the villagers have appreciated the central and the state governments for bringing in the projects to the region, they want the government to look into the issue before time runs out and the construction season ends before next monsoon.
