SHILLONG: The KHNAM state youth wing has raised concern over a possible influx of immigrants from Assam following the publication of the draft National Register of Citizens and sought the state home minister’s intervention in ensuring safety of the indigenous population in Meghalaya.
In a letter to Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, the KHNAM youth wing has said the possibility of an influx of migrants from Assam is high, “especially after the statement of Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma” that “illegal immigrants will be detected and deported”.
The youth wing has urged the department to step up vigil on the border area. “Additional forces also need to be deployed… especially at disputed areas between two states,” the statement read.
It added that the government should notify contractors not to hire “cheap labour” without proper identity check.
The home minister has assured KHNAM that he would look into the matter.
