TURA: The Congress campaign machinery has upped the ante for the elections projecting the developmental works initiated by the Mukul Sangma-led government to checkmate the National People’s Party (NPP).
Launching a blistering attack on the Conrad Sangma-led NPP, the chief minister’s younger brother Zenith questioned the opposition role in developing the state.
“Meghalaya has seen visible development under the leadership of Mukul Sangma and the Congress has fulfilled its promises to the people,” said Zenith while campaigning for his wife and Congress candidate Sadhiarani M Sangma at Bolchugre village of Gambegre constituency in West Garo Hills on Monday.
Lashing out at the NPP, Zenith claimed that the opposition party will not win a single seat in the ensuing election.
“Gambegre constituency has remained backward for many years. It needs a healing touch and only the Congress can bring development to the place. Everyone can see the pace of development that has taken place in Ampati, Rangsakona and Salmanpara where the people have elected Congress candidates,” said Zenith.
The younger sibling of the chief minister also cautioned the public against falling prey to the NPP propaganda. He said that the opposition party was creating confusion about the ambitious scheme of the chief minister to empower women by allegedly spreading false information.
“We have a vision to enhance livelihood of our women and promote micro enterprise in rural areas for which a sum of Rs 5000 was released to the beneficiaries,” said Zenith.
The NPP chief had accused the Congress of trying to woo voters ahead of the elections with the scheme and alleged that it was actually a loan from the bank.
“This scheme was launched in 2012 but due to certain hiccups the loan component was done away with. Close to 7000 beneficiaires have received the aid under this scheme recently in Rangsakona and other constituencies. The NPP is worried people will no longer support them which is why they are creating confusion,” said Zenith.
He did not fail to target the BJP as a “communal” party accusing it of creating instability in the country. “There is chaos and killing under the BJP regime in India whereas Congress is a secular party that has ensured peace in the country. There is a threat to the secular fabric of this nation because the BJP propagates the idea of one nation and one language,” cautioned the MLA.
