SHILLONG: The committee headed by Chief Secretary Y Tsering has disposed of the representations from tainted candidates following the education scam.
An official source said on Saturday that since the representations from the tainted teachers came after the deadline set by the committee, they were not considered and subsequently the matter was disposed of.
The panel was constituted on November 28 last following the order of the High Court of Meghalaya on November 2 related to various aspects of the education scam.
The court had cancelled the entire selection process of the government LP school teachers carried out in 2010 and asked the state government to go for fresh recruitment.
The committee comprising the chief secretary as chairman and members, joint secretary, Home and Political departments VR Syiem and educationist and former principal of Shillong College MPR Lyngdoh, had two sittings to consider the representations.
The deadline given by the court to the panel to submit its report to the education department was 60 days following its formation.
The November 2 order of the Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya had said the candidates who have been named tainted in the CBI and the High Level Scrutiny Committee reports can make a representation to the chief secretary for consideration.
The order had said if the committee accepts the representation and treats the candidate as untainted, “he or she will be entitled to the right of participation in the fresh selection process on a par with other untainted candidates”.
The court also said if the committee confirms the tainted character of any candidate, he or she will be permanently debarred from seeking any government employment and will also pay a penalty of Rs 50,000 to be deposited in the State Disaster Management Fund. The SC on Friday upheld the order of the HC which will compel the government to call for fresh recruitment.
