TURA: The GL Pharmaceuticals at Tura Hawakhana, which was earlier closed down by Garo NGOs was on Tuesday targeted by unknown miscreants, who tried to burn it down in broad daylight by setting fire to plastic found nearby.

The pharmacy owned by one, Vivek Agarwal was earlier closed down by NGOs like the GSU, FKJGP, AYWO and ADE who accused the owner of fraud as well as cheating a Garo business partner by depriving him of his share from the business, and eventually kicking him out.

The pharmacy was re-opened seven days ago in partnership with former ANVC B militant, Bernard Rimpu N Marak, after getting permission from the deputy commissioner and security provided by the Tura police.

West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Dr M G R Kumar confirmed the incident and said that it happened sometime before noon.

“I came to know of the incident only by 12 pm today so it must have happened sometime before that. We had deployed security at the time of its re-opening and a few days after that. However, as nothing untoward happened, security was removed and only routine patrolling was continued,” the police chief said.

According to the police chief as soon as the incident was reported, a police team was immediately rushed to the spot but the miscreants had already fled. He added that as per preliminary investigation, the damage to the shop was not major however the total damage would have to be assessed.

“We are waiting for the filing of an FIR and will continue our investigation from there. We will also have to check the CCTV footage from the camera installed at the shop for any evidence,” Kumar said.
