Special Summary Revision of PER launched in WKH
NONGSTOIN: With the aim of improving the election process in the country, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has implemented the ‘Special Summary Revision’ of photo electoral rolls of intensive nature with effect from January 1, 2019 as the qualifying date launched on Thursday by Deputy Commissioner KL Nongbri at the TRYSEM Hall at Nongstoin. The programme was attended by representatives of political parties, EROs, supervisors, BLOs, district heads and election branch staff. Nongbri explained that the purpose of the summary is to ensure that no voters are left out and stated that full cooperation, dedication and support of all election machineries including political parties of the district will be needed to complete the process. He also stressed on the needs for political parties to appoint Block Level Agents (BLAs) at polling stations. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by MV Lyngdoh, EAC Nongstoin.
Education Minister inaugurates school building
SHILLONG: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui inaugurated the new school building of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Higher Secondary School at Umniuhtmar in East Khasi Hills on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the students, teachers and managing committee are the three pillars on which the future of the students stand and urged the students to inculcate the spirit of competition and to make use of their talent. Meanwhile, local MLA Donkupar Roy expressed concern on the lack of infrastructure in rural schools and urged the students to work hard to be at par with students in urban areas. Meritorious students and founding members of the school were also awarded on the occasion.
MLA donates Rs 1 lakh to Laban Sports Club
SHILLONG: The members of the Monitoring Cum Implementation Committee of 19th South Shillong organised a meeting in collaboration with Laban Sports Club under the chairmanship of Sanbor Shullai at his residential office at Kench’s Trace on Wednesday. The objective of the meeting was to support the Laban Sports Club football team in the ongoing Shillong Football League. Shullai showed his support to the team by donating Rs. 1 lakh as a token of encouragement to the Laban Sports Club.
World Day against Child Labour observed
TURA: World Day against Child Labour was celebrated by Bakdil Childline in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Labour Department, District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) at Fr Henry Frassy Secondary Memorial School at Chidekgre, Babadam in West Garo Hills. The theme for the celebration was titled ‘In conflicts and disasters, protect children from child labour’. During the programme different speakers spoke on related topics and highlighted ways and means to curve child labour as well as to create awareness among the people on various rules and laws pertaining to it. West Garo Hills Labour Inspector, J Ch Marak elaborated on the Child Labour Act and Adolescent Act, 2016 and its various important provisions of how it can be applicable and for whom, while DCPU Child Protection Officer Wachi R Marak stated that it was not just the duty of Childline, Labour Department or DCPU to eradicate the menace but it is also the duty of every citizen as well. Tura Advocate D Baruah also highlighted the laws under the Legal Services and Child Labour Act, 2016.
