SHILLONG: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will chair the 67th plenary session of the NEC, the apex regional planning body, for two days in Shillong starting from July 9.
NEC Secretary Ram Muivah said on Sunday that the Union home minister is attending the meeting in his capacity as chairman of the NEC, while the DoNER minister is the vice chairman.
Earlier in June, the Union cabinet had approved the nomination of the home minister as the ex-officio chairman of the North Eastern Council (NEC).
Another cabinet approval was that the DoNER minister will serve as vice chairman of the council.
The new assignments are in the wake of the NDA government’s plan to push for economic development as there are many long-pending infrastructure projects in the North East.
The chief ministers and governors of all the Northeastern states are expected to take part in the NEC meeting.
The issues plaguing the region and other development initiatives for the North East are likely to be taken up for discussion.
Muivah said the agenda will be finalised by the chairman of NEC.
