SHILLONG: A doctor at Civil Hospital has been accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl who had to face a harrowing time to file an FIR due to the lukewarm response of the police.
TUR member Angela Rangad had filed an official complaint through Whatsapp with the District Superintendent of Police regarding the obstruction of justice by officers at a police station.
The complaint stated that the family members of the 17-year-old had gone to Lumdiengjri police station to file an FIR after learning that she had been sexually assaulted by the doctor at Civil Hospital on July 3.
According to Rangad, the family was advised to go to Laban police station as the incident took place within their jurisdiction. However, when they approached the Laban police station, they were told that the case could not be filed as the OC was unavailable.
Rangad said that the family later went to Sadar police station where the FIR was accepted and the girl was taken for medical examination.
The case was later transferred to Laban police station.
“Why did Lumdiengjri Police Station did not assist the victim by admitting the FIR when the family stays at mawprem and law says one can lodge an FIR at place of residence or place of occurrence,’’ questioned Rangad.
She also questioned the validity of the refusal by the Laban Police Station to accept the FIR on account of the OC’s absence.
Rangad has also asked the SP to conduct an inquiry into the lapses of the two police stations.
Attempts were made to contact the District SP but there was no response.
