SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Human Rights Commission has asked the DGP SB Singh to probe the violent incidents in the city from May 31 within one month following two complaints, one from Guwhati and another from a pastor in the city.
The complaint of an NGO from Guwahati, ‘We for Justice’ headed by retired Supreme court judge S.N. Phukan lodged on June 27 and addressed to the chairperson of the commission, Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia was to probe the violent incidents in the city over the Sweepers’Lane issue.
The NGO said violence had marred communal peace and harmony, while it wanted the panel to probe the reasons for the tension between the communities.
Besides the Guwahati NGO, Pastor Macdonald Pyngrope from Mission Compound had on June 11 petitioned the commission citing the use of expired teargas in a residential area and entry inside private premises by police personnel.
An official associated with the state human rights commission said that after the submission of the report by the DGP, the petitioners can examine it and if they are not happy, the commission will hear them.
