SHILLONG: Congress MLA and Opposition Chief Whip P T Sawkmie said Shillong medical college will not be materialised if Health Minister AL Hek does not take special interest in starting the project.
In a statement, Sawkmie also said there should be political will on the part of Hek to initiate and complete the project. Pending the completion of the TB hospital at Umsawli, the construction of the new medical college in Jhalupara will not begin. “Umsawli TB hospital project is yet to be completed and it has not progressed as per the plan to accommodate TB patients,” Sawkmie said.
According to Sawkmie, the Health Department has not shown any interest to complete the Umsawli project. Expressing concern over the delay in starting the medical college project, Sawkmie said if it had completed in time, the project would have benefited local students. “If no serious effort is made, the medical college project will become like the new Assembly building project, which is yet to see the light of day even after 17 years,” he added.
