Mawkyrwat: President of the United Democratic Party (UDP) South West Khasi Hills District, GG Bung Snaitang on Friday met education minister, Lahkmen Rymbui and raised the problems faced by the teachers’ community in the district after their salary was not released for four months.
“Today I met Education Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui and I have raised the problems faced by the teachers of our district in which he assured he will take up the matter soon,” Snaitang said, while speaking to The Shillong Times.
Snaitang said that it is unfortunate that inspite of working hard, teachers in the district are not getting their dues.
Except for government schools, teachers from both deficit schools and ad-hoc schools are not getting their salary since March 2018 while SSA school teachers were unpaid since April, he said.
“This is because the Sub-Divisional School Education Officer (SDSEO), B.T. Diengdoh takes leave for 60 days continuously delaying release of the salary of teachers,” Snaitang said.
He added that the Block Mission Coordinator, SSA, Mawkyrwat, John Thyrniang was given charge as SDSEO but unfortunately, he does not have the financial power to deal with salary of teachers.
Some teachers have also expressed anger over the decision of the SDSEO to take leave for more than two months without considering the plight of the teachers. “If he does not want to be the SDSEO, he should not accept his promotion,” the teachers said, adding that the officer first took leave for 15 days and extended it for 60 more days making it 75 days.
The teachers also demanded the government to settle the matter immediately.
