SHILLONG: Former ANVC-B chairman Bernard Marak has accused the GHADC of trying to settle land to a non-tribal with a copy issued to a non-existent nokma.
In a statement to the media, Marak said the land under Kongbe Ading under Danakgre Akhing was demarcated without the knowledge of the Akhing Nokma of Danakgre Akhing.
“GHADC issued a letter for demarcating a land measuring approximately 12 bighas with a copy addressed to the Nokma of Ranggira Akhing (which does not even exist) and made an attempt to settle a land to a non tribal body bypassing the actual Nokma of the Akhing. The copy of the letter was not sent to the real Nokma of Danakgre Akhing under whom the land felt but copy was sent to a non existent nokma of Ranggira Akhing. How GHADC made this mistake is a matter of concern,” the statement said.
Marak said poor Garo settlers live there. He blamed a nun of St Xavier’s, a non-tribal, for using police to instill fear among residents of the locality and use the religious platform to cover up her anti Garo activities.
On sunday afternoon, the residents of Kongbe Ading under Danakgre Akhing who are mostly Catholics held a meeting and stopped the erection of the boundary post.
“The sisters made the workers to camp in the land gifted to the SHG women’s federation. These people constructed a camp and also connected electricity illegally. The post erected by them encroached on the roads, the boundaries of local residents and also the SHG lands,” the statement said.
