TURA: A leader of a group of criminals calling itself the A’chik National Liberation Army (ANLA)  surrendered on Sunday to North Garo Hills Police at Resubelpara.

According to a delayed report, Rakkan M Sangma (20) of Rongmatcha Village under Resubelpara Police Station surrendered before North Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Dr Sacheng R Marak, other police officials, family members and Church leaders.

Police informed that Rakkan along with four others- Rabi N Marak, Finest N Marak, Karan N Sangma and Kraibit Ch Marak (all juveniles), after a secret meeting at Rangsel Reserve Forest had recently formed the group with the intent to collect arms and commit crimes like kidnapping, extortion etc in the region. While Rakkan remained absconding, all the four juvenile gang members were arrested by the police in the second week of July.

District police chief, Dr Sacheng R Marak informed that Rakkan made a revelation in a statement that he had also tried to meet Chairman of the now defunct GNLA, Champion R Sangma and ULFA leader, Dristi Rajkhowa before his gang members were arrested by police.

The gang had reportedly threatened village leaders of Rangsel Village of ‘dire consequences’ if they reported the group to the police. However, the combined efforts of police, Church leaders and villagers, who took a firm resolution not to bow down to the threats of the criminal gang led to the arrest of the gang members and subsequent surrender of its leader on Sunday.
