NONGPOH: The border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam has come to the fore once again with unknown miscreants allegedly from Assam vandalizing an under-construction bus shed at Sabuda village in Ri Bhoi District in the early hours on Tuesday.
The incident comes days after a special inter-state meeting between the governments of Assam and Meghalaya on July 20 decided to recognise developmental works being carried out by either side in their territory along the disputed border.
The concrete roof and the pillars of the passenger shed, which was being constructed under the MDC Scheme at a cost of Rs 1 lakh, was reportedly vandalised by miscreants from Assam.
Justing Masharing, the contractor executing the project, condemned the daily harassment meted out to residents of Meghalaya by Assam and urged the Meghalaya government to act accordingly so that the people residing in the border areas are not deprived of development schemes.
Meanwhile, the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner, R.M Kurbah said she received report of the incident and immediately instructed the Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police to depute a police team for spot inquiry.
Kurbah also added that the police are on the job to nab the miscreants involved in the act.
