MAWKYRWAT: Former chief minister Mukul Sangma is in Mawkyrwat to analyse the situation at the grassroots level before naming the candidate for the Congress for the Ranikor by-poll, sources said on Thursday.
Mukul, who is on a mission to defeat NPP candidate and five-time MLA Martin M Danggo, arrived here in the evening. He was accompanied by his wife Dikkanchi D Shira, MLA of Mahendraganj, daughter Miani D Shira, MLA of Ampati and Himalaya Shangpliang, MLA of Mawsynram, besides other Congress leaders.
The team met leaders of the party’s district committee as well as those of the ad hoc body of the Ranikor Block Congress Committee to get feedback on the party’s strength in Ranikor constituency. Later Mukul and his team left for Khonjoy where he will meet party workers and supporters in the border area.
“The main objective of the visit is to know the reality and the strength of the party in Ranikor constituency before naming the candidate for the by-poll,” the sources said, adding that Mukul’s mission “is to get a strong and winnable candidate who can defeat Danggo”.
Danggo formally joined NPP on Wednesday.
The sources said the state Congress leaders “feel humiliated by Danggo’s decision to resign from the party and join rival NPP” and “we will fight to win the election and if not, Danggo should be defeated”.
