GUWAHATI:  In  the wake of  reports about  people from Assam being allegedly harassed while travelling to neighbouring states following publication of final draft of updated NRC for the state, the Assam government has taken up the matter with the neighbouring states at the highest levels, Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia  informed  here on Thursday.

The DGP said, “We are aware of reports of people from our state being asked to show documents in some neighbouring states, following the final draft NRC here.”

“The deputy commissioners of border districts of Assam have taken up the issue with their counterparts of the bordering states, while our Chief Secretary has also taken it up with her counterpart in Meghalaya,” he added.

The DGP further informed the Assam CM had also pursued the matter with the chief minister of Meghalaya where most reports of such checking of documents of people  of Assam have been received from.

“We have explained the provision of the final draft of NRC to our  neighbouring states and asked them to ensure that there is no harassment of anyone on the basis of it,” the DGP added.
