NEW DELHI: Shillong MP Vincent Pala on Friday flagged the “dangerous” issue of the National Register of Citizens saying Meghalaya might have to bear the brunt of the whole exercise.
Speaking during zero hour in Parliament, Pala pointed out that that there was “uneasiness in Assam because of the 40 lakh unrecognised people”.
“Meghalaya, which was part of undivided Assam, is a small hill state with about 30 lakh people. If the issue of these 40 lakh people is not settled it might spill over to next door Meghalaya,” he cautioned and urged the Centre to take immediate precautionary steps.
After the final draft of the National Register of Citizens list was published on Monday, the Meghalaya government put all districts sharing borders with Assam on alert.
Situation normal after confusion over NRC
Following the initial confusion in the state after the publication of draft NRC in Assam, situation is normal in Meghalaya, a top police official said.
The official added that there is no cause of concern and everything is back to normal.
According to the official, there has been no incident of adverse nature in the state since the last two days.
Immediately after the publication of NRC, there was some confusion in the state when the KSU had setup infiltration check gates in different parts of the state to check immigrants coming to Meghalaya from other states.
Silchar MP Sushmita Dev had even written to the Union Home Minister accusing Meghalaya police and KSU of restricting the movement of many people from her constituency.
