JOWAI: There was strong objection to relocating Wapung C&RD block from Wapungskur to Lumshnong village in East Jaintia Hills at a public hearing organised by the district administration on Monday.
According to Deputy Commissioner FM Dopth, the public hearing was conducted on the basis of the Cabinet decision following an order of the Meghalaya High Court.
Village heads said the previous government under the leadership of Mukul Sangma “played a dirty political game on the issue”.
The previous government after following various procedures decided to shift the Khliehriat C&RD block to Wapungskur and the same was renamed Wapung C&RD block in January 2017. It was inaugurated on April 22, 2017, by the then C&RD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
However, during the last election, Independent MLA Justine Dkhar from Khliehriat did not support the Congress as he contested from BJP tickets.
“It is a dirty political game played by the former chief minister who again decided to shift the Wapung C&RD block from Khliehriat to Lumshnong just to benefit his party candidate from Sutnga constituency,” said AJYWO president MH Dkhar.
Speakers at the public hearing registered their strong protest against the move and some suggested creation of a new block in Lumshnong area instead of shifting the existing block office.
The public hearing was held at Wapung Higher Secondary School chaired by Dopth. Local MDCs Phasmoon Dkhar and Laksi Dkhar also attended it.
