SHILLONG: Peeved at the non-appointment of locals in certain posts at NEHU, student unions and other pressure groups on Monday met the Vice-Chancellor of NEHU regarding the matter.
KSU NEHU unit president James H Mawphniang said that there are no permanent posts in NEHU and only temporary posts such as acting registrar and acting finance officer are available.
“Local youths also apply for the posts and we want the locals to get preference in our own state,” he said adding that the VC and pro VC assured to fulfill their aspirations if the locals are competent and eligible.
General Secretary of the KSU-NEHU unit Pynkmenlang Sanmiet recalled that there was a demand for the appointment of a regular VC back in 2015. In the same year, there was also a demand to appoint a regular registrar, controller and finance officer.
“Till date, NEHU and MHRD have not responded to the memorandum with regard to the posts although they had received it at the time when Smriti Irani visited NEHU,” said Sanmiet.
“We will still follow up and if our demands are not met, we will decide on further action,” he added.
Meanwhile, Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) education secretary Wellesly Lyngkhoi criticized the apathy of the VC on the appointments in NEHU and also the grievances of the students.
“Many of the local tribals are eligible and are qualified to take up any post. NEHU should appoint local people to posts of registrar, finance officer, librarian and controller of examination,” he said.
“The VC and pro VC spoke to us and said they will look into this and assured us that locals will get preference in future,” he added.
