UPSC yet to approve full-time DGP

SHILLONG: The state is yet to have a full-time DGP even a month after SB Singh retired on July 31.
R Awasthi, DG Civil Defence and Home Guards, who took over as temporary DGP will retire by the end of September.
Home Minister James Sangma told reporters on Friday that the government is awaiting response from the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
Sources said the state government has completed all the requirements and it is up to UPSC to make the next move.The state government has already sent the reports related to aspiring candidates to the UPSC.
The state government had filed a petition before the Supreme Court to explore the possibility of appointing an acting DGP on July 30, a day before Singh retired.
The government had urged the Apex Court to modify its July 3 order prohibiting the appointment of any acting DGP.
As per the July 3 order, the appointment of a full-time DGP will have to be made by the UPSC.
On July 30, the Supreme Court had asked the UPSC to finalise the recommended names sent by the state government for the appointment of a permanent DGP within four weeks.
