SHILLONG: A delegation of the NPP ‘Mairang Assembly’ on Wednesday met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and demanded upgradation of Mairang Civil Sub-Division to a district. The delegation informed the chief minister that Mairang Civil Sub-Division is one of the oldest sub-divisions formed on November 10, 1976 when late Fuller Lyngdoh was the representative of Mairang.
It was in 1991 that the demand to make Mairang into a separate district surfaced. And following the formation of Ri Bhoi district, Mairang’s demand for a new district was carried on in the following years till date, the delegation said.
The NPP Mairang Assembly also submitted the same memorandum as in the previous years to the chief minister.
Members of the delegation urged the chief minister to fulfill the people’s dream and make Mairang into a new district.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma also felt that Mairang should be made into a district, however he said that the government will have to look into the matter before coming up with a resolution.
