SHILLONG: The UDP-HSPDP regional alliance will remain intact despite the two entities deciding to contest the district council elections on their own.
UDP senior leader Jemino Mawthoh made it clear that the party would like to contest in all seats in the KHADC and JHADC elections but the party’s alliance with HSPDP would continue.
He said the party leadership wants UDP and HSPDP to decide their candidates by looking at the winnability factor.
The first list of UDP candidates for the council polls will be announced on October 16 and the process of identification and selection of candidates will end on October 31.
Asserting that many MDCs and MLAs have joined the party, Mawthoh said people are more inclined towards regional parties for council seats and there was no threat from national parties.
“Even in Jaintia Hills, we have a good response now as we have few MLAs there,” he added.
On the Congress, Mawthoh said the party “is going downhill and the resignation of Lapang indicates that all is not well in Congress”.
