SHILLONG: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Meghalaya Assembly has asked the state government to consider construction of an alternative road to enter the state capital.
PAC member Zenith Sangma on Wednesday after the meeting of the PAC said that the Committee had suggested the need to construct another road which will serve as an alternative road
The suggestion from the PAC came as now the existing road through the Umiam dam is the only lifeline to the state capital from Guwahati and other parts of the country
Sangma said that the committee is of the apprehension that if by chance something goes wrong with the existing road, there will be no connectivity.
Reacting to a query, he informed that the proposed alternative road is from the VIP road to Mawsiatkhnam, Lumshyiap and Madan Nonglonglakhiat which is connecting with the Shillong bypass.
“So we have suggested the department to process this proposal for immediate sanction,” he added.
Sangma further said that the department was also directed to expedite the completion of the Mawlai bypass.
Stating that this will help mitigate the traffic congestion in the city, he said that 50 percent of the traffic jams at Mawlai junction will be solved as per the findings of the department.
Meanwhile, the PAC has also asked the department to address the problems faced by the local residents due to the ongoing construction works at Umroi Airport.
“While trying to facilitate the landing facility, two big hills have to be chopped and in the process the loose soil has been dumped (haphazardly) and this has created a lot of inconveniences to the local people,” Sangma said.
